Welcome to Data Dozen! My name is Erin Waldron and I’m delighted to be presenting at DAMA Day 2019. Here are a few notes to help you get the most out of the day.
WHAT YOU'LL LEARN
We will blend three seminar presentations with two hands-on workshops to create a thorough introduction to the field of data visualization and its relevance to all team members who contribute to an organization’s overarching data strategy. With a steady eye on real world applications, this series will empower you to not only build more effective visualizations, but to initiate more meaningful conversations around data in your organization. Here’s what each of our sessions will cover:
SESSION 1
BRINGING DATA TO LIFE: WHY VISUALIZATION MATTERS FOR ALL DATA PEOPLE
In the opening keynote, we’ll take an immersive look at the field of data visualization. From historical firsts to modern day takes, we’ll explore inspiring visualizations that illuminate each team member’s critical contributions to produce effective visual analysis.
SESSION 2
FORM FOLLOWS FUNCTION: PICKING THE RIGHT CHART FOR DIFFERENT DATA
In the first of two hands-on workshops, we’ll explore how to identify the right chart for different types of data. With step-by-step building instructions in Tableau Public, this session will highlight the most common chart types and when they are most effective.
SESSION 3
LONG AND SKINNY DATA: STRUCTURING DATA FOR VISUALIZATION
In the third session, we will deconstruct the ideal data structure for creating visualizations. From the level of aggregation to which variables to provide, this session will offer insights into the most common data structure hiccups visualization specialists experience.
SESSION 4
VISUALIZATION MAKEOVERS: AVOIDING THE MOST COMMON DATA VIZ MISTAKES
In our second hands-on workshop, we will stumble into and then fix the most common mistakes that crop up in data visualization. We’ll build these unhelpful charts together and leverage a variety of techniques to eliminate these prevalent pitfalls.
SESSION 5
THE COMMUNICATION CHECKLIST: IMPROVING ORGANIZATIONAL DATA CONVERSATIONS
Finally, we’ll dive into the most significant and wide-reaching feature underpinning good analysis: effective communication. We will build out a step-by-step checklist to facilitate more meaningful and compassionate organizational dialogues around data.

WHY TABLEAU?
During our two hands-on sessions, we’ll build our visualizations using Tableau Public. With its intuitive interface, malleable charts, and engaging output, Tableau has taken the data world by storm. If you’ve never seen a Tableau dashboard in action, check out one of the examples below. Each were built with the software’s completely free version, Tableau Public, which we’ll use together.

PREPARE
If you’d like to build your own visualizations during our two hands-on workshops, here are the three steps to prepare. If you’d prefer to just watch, that works too!
1) DOWNLOAD TABLEAU PUBLIC
Tableau Public is a completely free version of this powerful software. Before you bring your laptop to the workshop, let’s get Tableau set up. Just click here to download Tableau Public.
2) CREATE A TABLEAU PUBLIC ACCOUNT
Once you’ve download the application, go back to Tableau Public’s website and create an account. This will allow you to save what you build during our hands-on workshops.
3) Download the data
Finally, download the data set we’ll explore in Tableau. We’ll be using Kansas City’s 311 service call data. Just click here: DAMA Day Data Source – 2018 Kansas City 311 Service Requests
