Welcome to Data Dozen! My name is Erin Waldron and I’m delighted to be joining the SDP Fellows’ 2020 Winter Workshop. As you look through all the sessions, here’s a bit of information to help you decide if this workshop is right for you.

WHY TABLEAU?

With its intuitive interface, malleable charts, and engaging output, Tableau has taken the data world by storm. If you’ve never seen a Tableau dashboard in action, check out one of the examples below. Each were built with the software’s completely free version, Tableau Public, which we’ll use during the workshop.

WHAT YOU'LL LEARN

These hands-on workshops are designed to kickstart your Tableau skill set in just two hours. With an emphasis on Tableau’s key functionalities and practical applications, we’ll progress from basic charts to dynamic dashboards that incorporate interactive filters and design theory. By the end of the workshops, here’s what you’ll be able to do:

CREATE DYNAMIC DASHBOARDS

We will spend nearly all our time together building visualizations in Tableau. By the time you leave, you’ll have created three interactive dashboards from scratch, complete with intriguing tooltips and dynamic filters.

IDENTIFY THE BEST CHARTS

With good data visualizations, form should always follow function. We’ll discuss which types of charts work best for which types of data, and point out how to avoid common visualization missteps along the way.

DIVE INTO YOUR OWN DATA

With your newly minted skill set, you’ll be ready to dive into your own data when you return to your organization. If you work with public data sources, all the better! You can continue to create visualizations with Tableau Public for free!

HOW TO
PREPARE

If these workshops sound like the right session for you, there are just three things to do before you arrive. Don’t worry. They’ll only take a few minutes.

1) DOWNLOAD TABLEAU PUBLIC

Tableau Public is a completely free version of this powerful software. Before you bring your laptop to the workshop, just click here to download Tableau Public.

Follow the link above, enter your email address, and click the orange button to "Download the App".

This will kick off the download of Tableau Public onto your computer.

When the download is finished, double click the Tableau Public icon and walk through each step of the installation.

Once the installation has finished, locate where the software has been saved amongst your apps. Look for a white box with blue plus signs. Double click the icon to launch Tableau Public.

Once Tableau Public opens, you should see a screen like this. We'll pick things up here at the beginning of the workshop!

2) CREATE A TABLEAU PUBLIC ACCOUNT

Once you’ve download the application, go back to Tableau Public’s website and create an account. This will allow you to save what you build.

Head back over to Tableau Public's website and click the "Sign In" button in the upper righthand corner.

Enter your information and then click "Create My Profile."

And that's it! Now you will be able to save what we build during the workshop. Once you've created multiple dashboards, your profile will start to look like this.

3) Download the data

Just click right here to download the data set: Tableau Data – Harvard SDP Winter Workshop 2020. It may be a tiny Excel file, but it will power this entire Tableau Workbook.
