WELCOME
A data visualization workshop for every discipline.
This two-part data visualization bootcamp is built for graduate students in any and all disciplines. Whether you’re a social scientist, poet, or a chemist, this hands-on Tableau workshop is designed to empower you to turn the data that surrounds you into information you can use. Not really sure what data even is? No problem, this workshop kicks off at the very beginning. We’ll build visualizations you’ll recognize and ones you’ve never seen, stitch those charts into an interactive dashboard, and dive into how you can develop and leverage your newfound skill set as a student and after you graduate.
HOW TO PREPARE
Here’s how to get the most out of this hands-on workshop.
1
Click here to download the data for our beginner workshop. This Excel workbook contains ten years of university admissions data from the National Center for Education Statistics. Click here to download the data for our advanced workshop. This is nearly 50 years of World Bank data, from 1970-2018.
2
We will spend most of our time together building visualizations in Tableau. Click here to download Tableau Public, a completely free version of this powerful software. Then install and launch the application on the laptop you will use during the workshop. If you happen to have Tableau Desktop, that will work perfectly too.
3
Finally, if you would like to publish and share what you build during the workshop, go back to Tableau Public’s website and click Sign Up to create a Tableau Public profile. These credentials will allow you to upload your workbook and save it to Tableau’s cloud. Just remember: only save public data to Tableau Public.

Workshop #1
Kickstart your data visualization skill set with this engaging introduction to Tableau Software. Using real world identify which fundamental chart types are most effective for displaying different types of data, and how to stitch multiple charts together into a series of highly interactive dashboards. Whether you’re brand new to Tableau, or looking to reboot your skill set, this workshop is the perfect place to start.
Workshop #2
Ramp up your Tableau skills with the next round of more complicated chart types and the software’s more advanced features. Leveraging combination charts and a variety of calculations, we’ll explore strategies for displaying longitudinal data, tracking progress towards a goal, conducting comparative peer benchmarking, and highlighting overarching key performance indicators. As we expand our technical repertoire in Tableau, we’ll discuss when adding such complexity benefits our work and when it detracts from our ultimate goals. By the end of the workshops, you’ll be ready to dive into your own data with Tableau.
