The Bar Chart Club Conference is homegrown in Kansas City and built specifically for the central Midwest data community. Unlike impersonal national conferences that come with a hefty price tag and cross-country flight, we’re bringing world-class professional development right to your region—making it convenient, affordable, and designed to connect you with the peers and collaborators who also call this region home. It’s local, it’s accessible, and it’s built around the belief that the best professional communities are the ones you can nurture right where you live and work.
The Bar Chart Club is a thriving, in-person community built for chart makers—data analysts, visualization specialists, researchers, and anyone else who transforms data into compelling visual stories. We’re on a mission to bring together inspiring people and inspiring charts to elevate the craft of data analytics and communication. What began as quarterly meetups in Kansas City has quickly grown into a vibrant hub where data professionals connect, learn, and geek out about data. Now, we’re launching our first annual conference to amplify that energy and extend our reach across the central Midwest.
We’ve designed a dynamic two-day experience that balances hands-on skill-building with inspiring content and meaningful connections. Day one features Ă la carte workshops where attendees can dive deep into specific tools, techniques, and methodologies through interactive, hands-on sessions tailored to their interests and skill levels. Day two is the main conference event, packed with compelling keynote presentations, targeted breakout sessions, expert panels, and ample networking opportunities designed to spark conversations and forge lasting professional relationships.
On the first day, dive deep into specialized topics through interactive, small-group workshops where you’ll practice new skills with expert guidance in real time.
During keynotes, you’ll hear from leading voices in data visualization who will challenge your thinking, spark new ideas, and remind you why this work matters.
Choose from multiple concurrent sessions tailored to different skill levels, tools, and visualization challenges so you can customize your learning experience.
Gain insights from seasoned practitioners as they tackle tough questions, share hard-won lessons, and offer diverse perspectives on the evolving field.
The day before the conference we are excited to offer optional hands-on workshops with industry leaders.

Speaker: Erin Waldron, Data Dozen
Join data communication specialist, Erin Waldron, as she unpacks the most common blunders researchers make as we try to visualize our data in presentations, reports, and dashboards. These data visualization mistakes are predictable and pervasive, and they are likely undermining your own efforts to disseminate your research and amplify its impact. Over the course of this three hour workshop, you’ll learn how to take charts that are boring, confusing, or intimidating and transform them into engaging, intuitive visualizations that capture your audience’s attention. You’ll walk away with a step-by-step checklist to guide your next project, fully equipped to avoid the most common visualization potholes and ready to create a new path towards more meaningful data communication.
Speaker: Ethan Lang, Playfair Data
During this session, attendees will learn from Ethan how to connect to data, cover Tableau Desktop fundamentals, discuss the science behind why data visualization works, and practice making some of the most effective chart types in Tableau.
Speaker: Matt Snively, Playfair Data
During this session, Matt will introduce attendees to the foundational elements that make Power BI so useful. You’ll learn to load, structure, and transform data using Power Query Editor, discuss the science behind why data visualization works, and practice making some of the most effective chart types in Power BI Desktop.
Speaker: Eva Sibinga, Codecademy + Freelance
Data visualization is usually a combination of quantitative, qualitative, and visual components, and this confluence presents unique challenges and opportunities when it comes to using AI tools. During this workshop, we’ll cut through the hype and build a grounded perspective on some of the varied roles that AI tools can play in a data visualization workflow, from prompt engineering to agentic workflows to one-off helper tools. AI tools can range from helpful partners and incredible timesavers to frustrating distractions and dangerous liabilities. You’ll leave feeling empowered to build a workflow that works for you and to critically assess AI tools in this always-evolving landscape.

Speaker: Paul Scheetz
Speaker: Eva Sibinga
Have you ever been to a museum with someone who always seems to have something insightful to say about the work on the walls, and wondered how they do it? This isn’t simply a natural ability to “understand art”: it’s a skill that can be learned and developed! And even better, it’s one that we can directly apply to other forms of visual communication, and use to take our data visualization design to the next level. In this session, we will approach visual design and communication from inside the museum (virtually), building a common vocabulary and set of skills which are rooted in fine arts and which flourish in data visualization design. No previous art experience is required!
Panelists: KCAI Students
Moderator: Lisa Maione
Join three Kansas City Art Institute Students and their professor as they share their unique artistic take on displaying and communicating data effectively.Â
We will wrap up the day by picking three different lightning round table talks to attend. We’ll have a variety of speakers leading different talks on resources here in Kansas City. This “choose your own adventure” format will guarantee you end the day on a high note!
Featuring:
Speaker: Erin Waldron
We’ll close our day by sharing the highlights from our sessions and think through what we’re going to take with us and apply in our work going forward.
Location: SERV, 9051 Metcalf Ave, Overland Park, KS
After the conference concludes, we will head just down the road to SERV to enjoy some pickleball and light appetizers! If you plan on joining us, please be sure to RSVP on your registration!
This conference will be filled with experts from across the industry. As we finalize our schedule, we’re adding each speaker and panelist here. Check out their full bios below and click their name to connect with them on LinkedIn.Â

Our core conference team of two is supported by a team of volunteers who will be there the day of the conference to create an unforgettable experience for you. Here’s a little about us and how this conference came to be.
I am a data analyst and the owner of Data Dozen, an analytics studio based in Kansas City. I adore people, and I love a good chart. At the beginning of 2025, I launched The Bar Chart Club to bring together the vibrant analytics community in KC. I’ve been truly humbled by the incredible response. Our meetups have been some of the most well-attended and energizing local networking events in Kansas City this year. Our community pitched the idea of a conference.  I am delighted to bring the idea to life and expand the group’s reach to the central midwest. I can’t wait to connect with dear friends and meet new colleagues at the conference.Â
I am a Kansas City native with a background in public health who believes in the power of bringing people together. I thoroughly enjoy creating spaces where meaningful connections happen. As a young professional, I’ve worked in research collecting data and managing projects which has shaped how I approach collaboration and organization. I’m eager to learn more about data visualization and the vibrant community surrounding it. I’ve been fortunate to help organize energizing local gatherings, and I’m thrilled to bring that same care and attention to this event that celebrates both data and community.
