The DATA VISUALIZATION CHECKLIST

Speaker: Erin Waldron, Data Dozen

Join data communication specialist, Erin Waldron, as she unpacks the most common blunders researchers make as we try to visualize our data in presentations, reports, and dashboards. These data visualization mistakes are predictable and pervasive, and they are likely undermining your own efforts to disseminate your research and amplify its impact. Over the course of this three hour workshop, you’ll learn how to take charts that are boring, confusing, or intimidating and transform them into engaging, intuitive visualizations that capture your audience’s attention. You’ll walk away with a step-by-step checklist to guide your next project, fully equipped to avoid the most common visualization potholes and ready to create a new path towards more meaningful data communication.

Cornerstone Tableau Workshop

Speaker: Ethan Lang, Playfair Data

During this session, attendees will learn from Ethan how to connect to data, cover Tableau Desktop fundamentals, discuss the science behind why data visualization works, and practice making some of the most effective chart types in Tableau.

Cornerstone Power BI Workshop

Speaker: Matt Snively, Playfair Data

During this session, Matt will introduce attendees to the foundational elements that make Power BI so useful. You’ll learn to load, structure, and transform data using Power Query Editor, discuss the science behind why data visualization works, and practice making some of the most effective chart types in Power BI Desktop.

Adding AI to Your Dataviz Workflow

Speaker: Eva Sibinga, Codecademy + Freelance

Data visualization is usually a combination of quantitative, qualitative, and visual components, and this confluence presents unique challenges and opportunities when it comes to using AI tools. During this workshop, we’ll cut through the hype and build a grounded perspective on some of the varied roles that AI tools can play in a data visualization workflow, from prompt engineering to agentic workflows to one-off helper tools. AI tools can range from helpful partners and incredible timesavers to frustrating distractions and dangerous liabilities. You’ll leave feeling empowered to build a workflow that works for you and to critically assess AI tools in this always-evolving landscape.

15 Years of Personal Projects - How They Shaped Me And My Career

Speaker: Felicia Styer

The Data Kitchen: Your Stakeholders Ordered Dessert, Not a Farm Tour

Speaker: Paul Scheetz

As data professionals, we pour hours into the work behind the scenes but the real magic happens when insights hit the table. This session explores how to translate technical rigor into deliverables your stakeholders will actually consume, enjoy, and act on. Whether you’re presenting to the C-suite or a cross-functional partner, you’ll leave with fresh ideas for making your work resonate with any audience.

(Data) Visual Literacy 101: Lessons from Fine Art

Speaker: Eva Sibinga

Have you ever been to a museum with someone who always seems to have something insightful to say about the work on the walls, and wondered how they do it? This isn’t simply a natural ability to “understand art”: it’s a skill that can be learned and developed! And even better, it’s one that we can directly apply to other forms of visual communication, and use to take our data visualization design to the next level. In this session, we will approach visual design and communication from inside the museum (virtually), building a common vocabulary and set of skills which are rooted in fine arts and which flourish in data visualization design. No previous art experience is required!

KC Art Institute Panel

Panelists: KCAI Students
Moderator: Lisa Maione

Join three Kansas City Art Institute Students and their professor as they share their unique artistic take on displaying and communicating data effectively.

KC RESOURCE FAIR

the people behind the conference

meet our team

We're a small but mighty team.

Our core conference team of two is supported by a team of volunteers who will be there the day of the conference to create an unforgettable experience for you. Here’s a little about us and how this conference came to be.

I started the Bar Chart Club for our local data visualization community.

I am a data analyst and the owner of Data Dozen, an analytics studio based in Kansas City. I adore people, and I love a good chart. At the beginning of 2025, I launched The Bar Chart Club to bring together the vibrant analytics community in KC. I’ve been truly humbled by the incredible response. Our meetups have been some of the most well-attended and energizing local networking events in Kansas City this year. Our community pitched the idea of a conference.  I am delighted to bring the idea to life and expand the group’s reach to the central midwest. I can’t wait to connect with dear friends and meet new colleagues at the conference.

I am the event coordinator organizing the conference magic behind the scenes.

I am a Kansas City native with a background in public health who believes in the power of bringing people together. I thoroughly enjoy creating spaces where meaningful connections happen. As a young professional, I’ve worked in research collecting data and managing projects which has shaped how I approach collaboration and organization. I’m eager to learn more about data visualization and the vibrant community surrounding it. I’ve been fortunate to help organize energizing local gatherings, and I’m thrilled to bring that same care and attention to this event that celebrates both data and community.
