I specialize in leading professional development trainings focused on data communication and data visualization. These high-energy, hands-on workshops will help your team amplify the reach of your work. Too often, data folks bend over backwards to gather, clean, and analyze the data, but then the insights they’ve worked so hard to produce aren’t actually understood by the intended audience. I help fix that problem.
My workshops are designed to empower your data team to create more effective graphs, reports, presentations, and dashboards. We focus on tailoring each communication asset to the specific audience it is meant to serve. That way all of your team’s hard work culminates in projects people love to use (not projects that get thrown right in the digital trash can.)
Your team will learn how to:
Let’s unpack the most common blunders professionals make as we try to visualize our data in presentations, reports, and dashboards. These data visualization mistakes are predictable and pervasive, and they are likely undermining your own efforts to share your data and amplify its impact. Over the course of this workshop, you’ll learn how to take charts that are boring, confusing, or intimidating and transform them into engaging, intuitive visualizations that capture your audience’s attention. You’ll walk away with a step-by-step checklist to guide your next project, fully equipped to avoid the most common visualization potholes and ready to create a new path towards more meaningful data communication.
Your team will learn how to:
Let’s unpack the fundamentals of creating interactive digital visualizations that are both engaging and intuitive for our audience. We’ll deconstruct how to strategically leverage the deluge of hovering, clicking, and filtering functionality our modern tools offer, replacing audience overwhelm with enthusiasm. We’ll highlight the most common mistakes data creators make when building interactive visualizations in Tableau or Power BI, and debunk wide-spread misconceptions about how our audiences actually use the data tools we build. You’ll leave with a new perspective and a new toolkit to create engaging interactive visualizations your audience loves.
Your team will learn how to:
Let’s dive into the nitty gritty of chart design. Using a 16 point, step-by-step checklist, we’ll break down how to leverage universal design elements to turn ugly charts into stunning charts. In real time, we’ll transform a series of lackluster graphs into striking compositions. These before and after transformations will illustrate how powerfully aesthetic choices can impact whether or not our audience actually engages with our data.
Your team will learn how to:
Wrangling messy data is an essential skill for any data analyst, and yet it is one of the most overlooked, under- taught skill sets in the profession. Join us for a messy data deep-dive using Hadley Wickham’s tidy data framework. We’ll deconstruct the ideal format for analysis, and work through the ten most common messy deviations analysts encounter. We will restructure all ten examples into a usable format, discussing the most helpful tools and strategies along the way.
Your team will learn how to:
Presentations are a cornerstone of data communication, but creating an effective slide deck with data can be tough. Join us as we breakdown the anatomy of an effective data presentation. From storytelling hooks to memorable frameworks to slide design, we’ll deconstruct the most impactful presentation elements and tailor them specifically to data communication.
1) Fill out the quote form
Start by filling out the quote form here. This will give me a basic outline of what your team is looking for.
2) Explore a workshop
Next, you and I will hop on a free exploratory phone call. I will learn about your team’s goals, answer any questions you have, and we’ll see whether or not a collaboration is a good fit.
3) Review your proposal
If you’re excited to move forward after our phone call, I will draft a proposal for your review. We’ll iterate on this draft until we’ve fully captured your goals.
4) Book your date
Once you’ve accepted the proposal, we’ll pick a date for your training. A 50% booking deposit is required to officially secure your date.
5) Host your training
Finally, game day! Whether we’re in-person or virtual, your team will engage in a hands-on, high energy workshop to elevate their data communication and visualization skills.
6) Get your data
Along with the final invoice, I will send you the survey data collected at the end of the workshop so you can see what your team thought of the training.
I work with all sorts of organizations: corporations, nonprofits, government agencies, educational institutions. The teams who bring me in have some responsibility for analyzing and communicating important data, and they want to improve how they do that work.
Yes! In fact, when I started my business many years ago, my workshops were exclusively for students. I typically work with undergraduate or graduate students. Their fields of study vary widely. For example, I’ve worked with MBA students specializing in business intelligence, social science PhD students focused on disseminating the research from their lab, and undergraduate liberal arts students incorporating data into literary analysis. Sometimes, administrators focused on career development host my workshops. Other times, a specific institute or lab will bring me in to facilitate a workshop for their students, professors, and staff.
Not at all! My data workshops are intentionally tool-agnostics. Whether you use Tableau, Power BI, Excel, PowerPoint, D.3, R, Python, or any other tool, the content from these workshops will be easy to apply. (If you’re looking for specific training on using Tableau, I also offer that.)
Absolutely. Some organizations are excited to host a bootcamp-style workshop in a single day or two. There are other teams that want to spread out their 12 hour training budget over a month, leading a three-hour training each Friday for a month. We will work together to find the best learning cadence for your team.
Yes! I adore in-person events. I often travel to facilitate onsite trainings. Travel reimbursements are added to the workshop cost.
What matters most for an in-person event is a great screen. I use my laptop to share a presentation throughout the entire workshop. A weak projector or fuzzy, small screen can ruin a training. We will talk through how to set up your space to get the most out of the event.
Definitely! With the number of remote teams continuing to grow, I’ve had tons of experience leading virtual events. According to the survey data I collect after each workshop, these trainings are just as effective virtually as they are in-person.
I always recommend attendees bring their computer to the event if possible. There are also events I host where the organization is eager to have attendees complete some pre-work ahead of the event. We can absolutely accommodate that. other teams need to be able to just show up, and that’s great too.
To officially book a workshop with me, organizations pay a 50% deposit to secure their workshop date. The remaining 50% along with any applicable travel reimbursements are due 30 days after the workshop takes place.
