Join us for a hands-on, high energy introduction to visualizing data with Tableau Software. With its drag-and-drop interface and dynamic output, this is a tool every analyst should have in their kit.
Welcome to Data Dozen! My name is Erin Waldron and I’m delighted to be joining the SDP Fellows’ 2019 Winter Workshop. As you look through all the sessions, here’s a bit of information to help you decide if this workshop is right for you.
With its intuitive interface, malleable charts, and engaging output, Tableau has taken the data world by storm. If you’ve never seen a Tableau dashboard in action, check out one of the examples below. Each were built with the software’s completely free version, Tableau Public, which we’ll use during the workshop.

This hands-on workshop is designed to kickstart your Tableau skill set in just two hours. With an emphasis on Tableau’s key functionalities and practical applications, we’ll progress from basic charts to dynamic dashboards that incorporate interactive filters and design theory. By the end of the workshop, here’s what you’ll be able to do:
We will spend nearly all our time together building visualizations in Tableau. By the time you leave, you’ll have created three interactive dashboards from scratch, complete with intriguing tooltips and dynamic filters.
With good data visualizations, form should always follow function. We’ll discuss which types of charts work best for which types of data, and point out how to avoid common visualization missteps along the way.
With your newly minted skill set, you’ll be ready to dive into your own data when you return to your organization. If you work with public data sources, all the better! You can continue to create visualizations with Tableau Public for free!

Tableau Public is a completely free version of this powerful software. Before you bring your laptop to the workshop, just click here to download Tableau Public.
Once you’ve download the application, go back to Tableau Public’s website and create an account. This will allow you to save what you build.
Just click right here to download the data set: Atlanta Public Schools_2012-2017. It may be a tiny Excel file, but it will power this entire Tableau Workbook. You can also download the complete Step-by-Step Guide for building this workbook.
