WELCOME
We’ve got a Tableau workshop for each phase of the data visualization life cycle.
Whether you’re brand new to Tableau or looking to take your skills to the next level, this four-part data visualization series has a workshop for you. Check out each description below, and pick the sessions that look interesting to you (which may just be all of them). And if you have a scheduling conflict, don’t fret. We’ll share the recordings of each event as well so you can follow along when the timing is right for you.
HOW TO PREPARE
Here’s how to get the most out of these hands-on workshops.

DOWNLOAD THE DATA
Each workshop will have a different data set. These will be relatively small Excel files, but they will power every visualization we create together. You’ll find each data set ready to download with the workshop descriptions below. Before the workshop, just download the data set and save it somewhere easy to find.

We will spend most of our time together building visualizations in Tableau. Click here to download Tableau Public, a completely free version of this powerful software. Then install and launch the application on the laptop you will use during the workshops. If you happen to have Tableau Desktop, that will work perfectly too.

Finally, if you would like to save what you build during the workshops, go back to Tableau Public’s website and click Sign Up to create a Tableau Public profile. These credentials will allow you to upload your workbook and save it to Tableau’s cloud. Just remember: only save public data to your Tableau Public profile.

Beginner Bootcamp
HOW TO START BUILDING DYNAMIC CHARTS & INTERACTIVE DASHBOARDS IN TABLEAU
FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 16, 2022 ⋅ 8:30 AM – 11:30 AM
Kickstart your data visualization skill set with this engaging introduction to Tableau Software. Using business data and real world questions, you’ll learn how to use Tableau’s drag-and-drop interface to build dynamic data visualizations. We’ll identify which fundamental chart types are most effective for displaying different types of data, and how to stitch multiple charts together into a series of highly interactive dashboards. Whether you’re brand new to Tableau, or looking to reboot your skill set, this workshop is the perfect place to start.

Advanced Charts
HOW TO VISUALIZE TIME, BENCHMARKS, AND KEY PERFORMANCE INDICATORS
FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 16, 2022 ⋅ 1:00 PM – 4:00 PM
Ramp up your Tableau skills with the next round of more complicated chart types. Leveraging combination charts and a variety of calculations, we’ll explore strategies for displaying longitudinal data, tracking progress towards a goal, conducting comparative peer benchmarking, and highlighting overarching key performance indicators. As we expand our technical repertoire in Tableau, we’ll discuss when adding such complexity benefits our work and when it detracts from our ultimate goals.

Data Preparation
HOW TO STRUCTURE, CLEAN, AND VALIDATE YOUR DATA SET FOR TABLEAU
SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 17, 2022 ⋅ 9:00 AM – 12:00 PM
Transform unruly data into Tableau-ready files. Designed for the technical novice, this workshop will give all business analysts a substantial leg up when it comes to data analytics. This workshop is the bedrock for all Tableau projects in the real world. We’ll dive into the nitty gritty of preparing your data set for analysis. From creating the proper data structure with pivots, joins, and unions, to cleaning up the data’s inconsistencies with calculated fields, data type changes, groups, and sets, you’ll learn how to maximize the possibilities your data set has to offer.

Dashboard Design
HOW TO build visually impactful and delightfully intuitive dashboards
SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 17, 2022 ⋅ 1:00 PM – 4:00 PM
Last but certainly not least, our final workshop is all about design. We’ll explore a suite of design elements that transform basic Tableau dashboards into visually striking final products that your end audience will love to use. With a steady eye on the user experience, we’ll unpack how elements like color, fonts, weight, and spacing can coalesce into dashboard layouts that offer both aesthetic impact and precise interpretations. This final workshop shows analysts how to ensure that their technical efforts consistently produce insightful and meaningful experiences for their audience.

Remember, the full version of Tableau Desktop is completely free for all students. Click here to register for your free, one-year license. The full version of Tableau allows you to connect to a variety of data sources and save your work locally, which empowers you to work with proprietary data you can’t save to Tableau Public.

The Tableau community is full of exciting ways to participate. Makeover Monday is a leader in this space who offers a weekly challenge where everyone remakes an existing visualization and then shares their creations. Diving into a new data set each week, even for an hour, will expand your skills exponentially.

The Tableau Public Gallery isn’t just a fantastic place to gather inspiration; it’s a wonderful learning tool. Pick the dashboards that you’d like to be able to build, download the Tableau workbook, and start to deconstruct the dashboard in Tableau. This reverse engineering strategy is how I got my Tableau start.
